The Monty Roberts Dually Halter

A complete guide to the world's most popular training halter — how it works, which size to buy, how to fit it, and what you can use it for.

What is the Dually Halter?

The Dually Halter is a patented schooling halter designed by Monty Roberts, the horseman best known for his Join-Up method. It has been used on over a million horses worldwide since its introduction and is the go-to tool for professional trainers, riding schools, and horse owners across the UK and beyond.

Unlike a standard headcollar, the Dually features a double noseband with adjustable training rings on each side. This design allows the handler to communicate clearly with the horse through gentle, directional pressure across the nose — and, crucially, an immediate release when the horse responds correctly.

How the Dually Halter Works

The key to the Dually is its double noseband. The inner band sits snugly against the nose, while the outer band allows for adjustment. When the horse pulls or resists, the noseband applies even pressure across the bridge of the nose. The moment the horse yields, the pressure releases completely.

This pressure-and-release mechanism works with the horse's natural instincts. Horses naturally move away from pressure, so they quickly learn that responding to a light signal removes the discomfort.

Importantly, the Dually applies no poll pressure. Many horses lean into poll pressure from standard headcollars, which teaches them to pull harder. The Dually avoids this entirely.

Dually Halter Sizes

The Dually Halter comes in five sizes, each colour-coded for easy identification. Use the measurements below to find the right fit for your horse.

Tip: Head size matters more than body weight for a proper fit. If your horse is between sizes, the larger size is usually the better choice. The three adjustment points on the Dually allow you to fine-tune the fit.

How to Fit the Dually Halter

Correct fitting is essential for the Dually to work properly. The noseband should sit about two fingers' width below the cheekbone. The chin strap should be snug but not tight — you should be able to slide a flat hand between the strap and the jaw. The training rings should sit on either side of the nose, level with each other.

Every Dually Halter includes a printed fitting and instruction booklet. For a visual walkthrough, watch the video below.

Training Uses

The Dually Halter is a versatile tool used by professionals and owners for a wide range of ground work and riding activities.

Leading

Horses that pull, barge, or refuse to lead respond well to the Dually. The nose pressure gives the handler clear communication without needing strength or a chain lead. Most horses walk calmly on a loose rope within a few sessions.

Trailer Loading

Loading difficult horses is one of the most common uses for the Dually. Monty Roberts developed many of his loading techniques specifically with the Dually, using approach-and-retreat to build the horse's confidence without force.

Long-Lining

The left and right training rings make the Dually ideal for long-lining. You can give independent lateral aids through each ring, which helps with steering, bending, and transitions without a bit.

Riding as a Bitless Bridle

Many riders use the Dually as a bitless bridle for schooling, hacking, and trail riding. The lateral training rings provide steering, while the noseband gives clear stopping aids. It is a popular choice for horses with mouth injuries, dental issues, or those being introduced to ridden work.

Standing for the Farrier & Vet

The Dually gives handlers extra control during farrier visits and veterinary procedures. The clear pressure-and-release communication keeps horses calmer and more cooperative than a standard headcollar.

General Ground Work

From desensitisation to Join-Up, the Dually is the standard tool used in Monty Roberts' training courses worldwide. Its design supports any ground-work exercise where clear, fair communication between horse and handler is important.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Dually Halter made of?

The Dually Halter is made from double-stitched nylon webbing with solid brass hardware. The brass fittings are designed to breakaway under extreme pressure for safety.

Can you ride with the Dually Halter?

Yes. The Dually Halter can be used as a bitless bridle for riding. Many riders use it for trail riding, schooling, and as a stepping stone when transitioning to bitless work.

How is the Dually different from a normal headcollar?

The Dually has a patented double noseband with training rings on each side. When the horse pulls, gentle pressure is applied across the nose. When the horse gives, the pressure releases immediately. A standard headcollar applies pressure to the poll, which many horses lean into.

Does the Dually Halter hurt the horse?

No. The Dually applies gentle, even pressure across the nose and releases as soon as the horse responds. There is no poll pressure, no chain, and no sharp edges. It is designed to work with the horse's natural instincts.

Can I use the Dually Halter as a headcollar?

Yes. When the lead rope is clipped to the centre ring under the chin (rather than the training rings), the Dually functions as a standard headcollar. Many owners use it as their everyday headcollar and only switch to the training rings when schooling.
